Exciting weekend ahead as Olympians and sporting celebrities compete in triathlon at Dorney Lake

Press Release 8/7/09 – for immediate release

Exciting weekend ahead as Olympians and sporting celebrities compete in triathlon at Dorney Lake

Last weekend saw some thrilling action at Dorney lake as celebrities Linda Barker and Gabby Logan swam, cycled and ran their way to their first ever triathlon at the Timex WomenOnly event on Saturday. Jenson Button also took time out of his grueling schedule to race in the King Sturge Property triathlon on Friday, finishing in an impressive 5th place overall.

But this coming weekend sees even more excitement with some top Olympic champions and sporting celebrities all heading to Dorney Lake for more triathlon action.

First up is Olympic champion and leukaemia survivor Maarten Van Der Weijden who is swimming in the inaugural blueseventy Great Big Open Water Swim on Saturday at 10am. Van Der Weijden, an ambassador for leading wetsuit manufacturer, blueseventy, won a surprise gold at Beijing after a five year battle with leukaemia, pipping race favourites to the post in the 10km open water swim.

Fittingly, Van Der Weijden is also swimming on Sunday in the Bananaman triathlon, which is in aid of Leukaemia Research. He is taking the 800m swim leg of the relay event alongside world record holder, marathon runner and double leg amputee, Richard Whitehead. Richard will run the 7.5km leg of the triathlon but also be there to meet and support 7yr old Conor Ballard from London, who has a prosthetic limb and is taking part in the kid’s scootathlon at 9.30am on Sunday morning.

Supporting Leukaemia Research is Tony Blair’s former Director of Communications, Alistair Campbell who is renowned for not only his fundraising efforts, but is a keen runner and cyclist. Alistair will be taking on the 30km bike section in the team relay for Leukaemia Research along with Olympic champion canoeist and doctor Tim Brabants, who will swim 800m before handing over to Campbell.

And like Jenson Button, who races in triathlon to keep his fitness level high, four of the UK’s top skiers are using the race this weekend as an alternative for some off-season training. TV presenter and former GB skier Graham Bell along with Ed Drake, Jayme Baggio and Marc Telling are all going head to head in the individual event, which comprises an 800m swim, 30km bike and 7.5km run.

The action kicks off on Saturday at 10am with the 1mile swim followed by the 1km and 3km shortly after.

Sunday sees a 9.30am start for the children’s scootathlon followed by the start of the main BananaMan event at 10.30am. The relay triathlon kicks off at 11.30am and the remainder of the individual waves go on throughout the day.

Publication of poker pro Roy Brindley’s autobiography set to rock gambling world

There are poker books and there are poker books …but there has never been a book like the forthcoming autobiography, Life’s a Gamble.

When literary agent Heather Holden-Brown — whose previous clients include actress Barbara Windsor, Spice Girl Emma Bunton, politician David Cameron and X-Factor judge Louis Walsh — asked Roy Brindley to document his rags-to-riches transformation from an addicted gambler, once homeless who had struggles with the law, to a successful poker player with a plethora of televised and ranking tournament wins to his credit, much was expected ...and “The Boy” delivered.

The proof? When the bidding war ended it was Transworld, the British division of Random House Group, the world’s largest English-language general trade book publisher (whose recent biographies include: Padraig Harrington, Steven Gerrard, Shane Warne, Jamie Carragher, Jonathan Ross and Steven Gerrard) that opted to publish the Dublin-based Englishman’s superb memoirs.

Life’s a Gamble is an account of one man’s journey through adversity to an enviable life that sees him live in lavish home with a Porsche and Ferrari in his driveway.

Make no mistake this is not the story of a man born with a silver spoon who acquired the Midas touch. As Jesse May, the ‘voice of poker’ says in his foreword, “This is a blasting, naked account of what it is to be a gambler …he’s coming at you with nothing left out.”

Self deprecating, brutally honest and level headed — Roy will not be handing out signed copies of Life’s a Gamble to eliminated tournament opponents — his biography takes the reader through desperate lows to dizzy heights, from recklessness to redemption. It is an incredible journey; little wonder advanced copies have seen the mainstream critics raving.

Roy Brindley’s autobiography ‘”Life’s a Gamble – The High Stakes and Low Life of a Poker Professional” is available in Trade Paperback from Bantam Press on February 26, 2009.
